Gambia Massage

The beginning of massage reaches deep antiquity. In 1841 during excavation of a military commander’s grave in ancient Egypt papyrus was found where massage of the calf and foot was described, massage in ancient China was already known 2500 years B.C.
In India in 1800 years B.C. massage techniques and technical options for massage of different parts of the body were described in detail in medical tracts, which have a common name “Ayurvedas” (”Knowledge of Life”).

In Greece the term “apatherapy” was used to describe medical, sanitary and sports massages. Massage was one of medical elements at that time. Rubbing the skin and underlying soft tissues stretches the microscopic fibers that make up these tissues. Abnormal fibers are stretched or broken, muscles loosened and relaxed, and the circulation of the blood and lymph is enhanced. Cellular wastes trapped in tight tissues can cause chronic irritation and pain. Massage helps to release these wastes and allow them to be carried by the circulation to processed and excreted.

Massage has something for everyone. Massage for athletes is increasingly seen as essential to achieving optimal effects in physique, performance and stamina, with less injury and faster recovery. Babies benefit from the soothing, nurturing and reassurance of loving touch. Seniors benefit from circulation enhancement and the comfort of physical human touch. An hour of massage enhances the circulation equivalent to a three mile hike. Disaster workers pushed to exhaustion are restored, victims in shock after emotional trauma are calmed and sedated. Patients in acute or chronic pain find relief without drugs, and surgery wounds heal faster with less scarring.

The art of massage is in tailoring the work to the needs of the individual. To be optimally effective, the massage practitioner must tune into the client to know what needs to be done, how best to proceed and how long and how deep to work. Massage as a healing art is a natural time proven method of treatment that promotes health and well being in ways unique to massage.

Health benefits of massage
Massage can relieve tension in your muscles, and most people use it for relaxation, relief of stress and anxiety, or to reduce muscle soreness. Massage can also cause your body to release natural painkillers, and it boosts your immune system.

Research and studies have found it helpful for:
Anxiety
Massage reduced anxiety in depressed children and anorexic women. It also reduced anxiety and withdrawal symptoms in adults trying to quit smoking.
Pain
Pain was decreased in studies of people with fibromyalgia, migraines and recent surgeries. Back pain also might be relieved by massage. However, back pain study results have been contradictory, and more research is required.
Labour pain
Massage during labor appears to reduce stress and anxiety, relax muscles and help block pain.
Infant Growth
Massage encouraged weight gain in premature babies and reduced the number of days they stayed in the hospital.
Children with Diabetes
Children who were massaged every day by their parents were more likely to stick to their medication and diet regimens, which helped reduce their blood glucose levels.
Sports-Related Soreness
Some athletes receive massages after exercise, especially to the muscles they use most in their sport or activity. A massage might help increase blood flow to your muscles and may reduce muscle soreness after you exercise.
Alcohol and Substance Withdrawal
Massage during withdrawal from alcohol and substance abuse has shown benefits when combined with traditional medical treatment by increasing feelings of support, safety and engagement in the therapy.
Immune System
People with HIV who participated in massage studies showed an increased number of natural killer cells, which are thought to defend the body from viral and cancer cells.
Cancer Treatment
People with cancer who received regularly-scheduled massage therapy during treatment reported less anxiety, pain and fatigue.
Self-Esteem
Because massage involves direct contact with another person through touch, it can make you feel cared for. That special attention can improve self-image in people with physical disabilities and terminal illnesses. And using touch to convey caring can help children with severe physical disabilities.
